The Chargers today are expected to formally announce they have no intention of exercising their option to leave San Diego.
The team, in conjunction with Mayor Jerry Sanders' office, will announce this morning that it will play its 2012 games at Qualcomm Stadium while it continues to develop plans for a new stadium, according to U-T San Diego.
"We will continue to work closely with the mayor on developing the East Village bus maintenance site in downtown San Diego,'' Chargers general counsel Mark Fabiani told the newspaper.
The Spanos family, which owns the Chargers, has been pushing for a decade for a new home to replace the aging Qualcomm Stadium. The Chargers have a lease with the city that expires in 2020, but each year, starting Feb. 1 through April 30, the franchise can exercise an option to move to another city.
It has been no secret that Los Angeles would like to welcome the team but site issues have apparently pushed back any competition, according to U-T San Diego.
