The Marine Corps has opened an investigation into rocks found on a beach near Camp Pendleton that left a San Clemente woman with third-degree burns last month.
Camp Pendleton spokesman Capt. Barry Edwards told Camp Pendleton Patch:
“We’ve already intiated an internal investigation to determine the possible origins of the rocks... We’re going to conduct a thorough investigation.”
As Home Post reported earlier, Lyn Hiner, 43, was at San Onofre State Beach with her husband Ron and children on May 12. Hiner's children had collected beach rocks and taken them home. When Hiner began tidying up the house by placing the rocks in her pockets, her clothing caught fire. The fire was so intense it set off the smoke detectors in the Hiner home.
According to the Orange County Register, independent lab tested the rocks in question and found they had elevated levels of phosphate.
