The Story Of Facundo The Great

When you report, as I have for a few years now, from Latino neighborhoods, you learn there are certain figures held in such high regard that everyone knows their names. They come up in casual conversations about activism, history, community pride.

One of those is Ramón “Chunky” Sanchez, San Diego’s best-known grassroots Latino troubadour, whose songs provided the soundtrack for the local Chicano movement of the 1970s.

So I was pleased to see this short animated film featuring Chunky, produced by the Story Corps project. In it he remembers a time when if you were a Latino school kid known by your given name, it wasn’t for lack of your teachers’ efforts to give you a new one.
