Naval Base Coronado Scores Top Defense Dept. Environmental Award

Naval Base Coronado received a top national honor from Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel for its approach to dealing with threatened species at Naval Air Station North Island and seven other locations.

The base won the Secretary of Defense's Environmental Award for natural resource conservation.

"It makes me extremely proud when our installations receive recognition for their dedication and service to the Navy," said Edith Jacobsen, NAVFAC Southwest Environmental conservation lead, in a statement. "It reflects on all of the southwest, Navy Region Southwest, and NAVFAC Southwest when the team effort, innovation, and can do attitude is reflected in such important awards."

NBC deals with the complications of having 31 threatened species on the grounds of eight installations, including four in Coronado and Imperial Beach, and those that are farther afield, including the San Clemente Island Range Complex.

The base won another honor last month, receiving the Secretary of the Navy's environmental award, also for natural resource conservation.
