Social service agencies in the San Diego area have been awarded around $16 million in federal grants to assist the homeless, Councilman Todd Gloria announced Tuesday.
The funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is intended to provide housing and services to the area's homeless population.
"These funds will go a long way to help us achieve real results addressing homelessness," Gloria said. "As chairman of the (San Diego Regional Continuum of Care Council Governance Board), I thank our membership for the intensive efforts that resulted in the award of these funds for our community. San Diego is fortunate to have local homeless housing and service providers dedicated to serving this vulnerable population."

Some of the largest HUD grants were awarded to the San Diego Housing Commission, almost $1.9 million; Transitional Living Continuum, a little over $1 million; Solutions Consortium, $663,000; Village Rapid Rehousing for Families, $663,000; and PATH Connections Housing, $623,000.
The Housing Commission runs homeless and affordable housing programs for the city; the Solutions Consortium is a collaboration between public and private agencies led by St. Vincent de Paul; and Connections Housing is a downtown homeless shelter that offers housing and services.
Funds will be used to pay for continuing programs and to start new ones, Gloria said.
He said that among the programs to receive HUD funding is a management information system that improves coordination of care by allowing different agencies to access data about individual homeless people.
