This weekend brings a musical about pie, a neighborhood chili battle with live music, and Shakespeare-style plays made up on the spot.

"Waitress"

Broadway San Diego presents "Waitress," a musical based on Adrienne Shelly's 2007 film.

The story is about Jenna, an expert pie-baker who uses her skills as a way to cope with her bad marriage. Together with a collection of small town characters, she finds an unexpected path to a new life.

The musical features songs by Sara Bareilles. It had a successful Broadway run and will open in London's West End in 2019.

The SoNo Fest and Chili Cook-Off is an arts-oriented holiday festival that showcases music, food and artists from North Park and South Park.

Now in its ninth year, the festival features three stages of local music, including the Creepy Creeps, The Downs family, School of Rock and more. It also has a holiday market featuring art and gifts made by local artisans.

The main draw is the chili contest that sees popular restaurants like Blind Lady Ale House, City Tacos and Starlite battle for top honors. The chili is served in handmade ceramic bowls made by San Diego Ceramic Connection.

Details:11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. 32nd and Thorn Streets, North Park. Free to $20; find tickets to SoNo Fest.

Improvised Shakespeare Company

The Improvised Shakespeare Company is an improv troupe that blends spontaneity with Shakespeare.

The Chicago-based troupe creates a fully improvised Shakespearean show on the spot. Nothing has been planned or written, but much of the stories follow classic plots including battles and mistaken identities.

This acclaimed group has a rotating cast that sometimes includes Thomas Middleditch from HBO's "Silicon Valley."

Jade Hindmon
Jade Hindmon is KPBS Midday Edition co-host. Prior to making San Diego home, Jade worked in markets across the Southeast and Midwest, building a network of sources to tell the stories of people in each community. She worked as a multimedia journalist and anchor at WRTV in Indianapolis. While there, she launched “The Weekend Edition of Good Morning Indiana” and generated breaking news content for both broadcast and digital platforms. Prior to Indianapolis, she was an anchor and multimedia journalist at FOX Carolina in Greenville, SC. As part of that Emmy Award winning team, she covered elections, landed exclusive interviews, and interviewed presidential candidates. Jade also had the opportunity to cover international news and was able to travel to South Africa during the 2010 World Cup. Jade is a three-time Emmy nominee, a National Association of Black Journalists Salute to Excellence Finalist, and the recipient of a South Carolina Associated Press Award. She is a proud graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Nina Garin
Nina Garin previously produced and edited the KPBS/Arts calendar. She also wrotes the weekly KPBS/Arts Newsletter and produced arts segments for Midday Edition. Before joining KPBS, Nina worked for nearly 20 years as an arts and entertainment reporter at The San Diego Union-Tribune. Along with covering the local arts community, she created the "Top Weekend Events" online calendar, profiled influential San Diegans for the "One-on-One" series, and reported live from Comic-Con, New York Fashion Week, and the Academy Awards. Nina is a native San Diegan, raised in Chula Vista and Tijuana, who was exposed to local arts at an early age. As a child, she tagged along to her mother's photography classes, taught by the late Michael Schnorr. She went to elementary school blocks away from Balboa Park and visited all the museums at least twice. While earning her English degree at San Diego State University, she participated in poetry readings and covered local music for The Daily Aztec. Nina has two daughters who study ballet, piano, and musical theater. She spends her free time pinning hair buns and perfecting stage makeup. Her husband, Matthew, is also a writer.
