When: Thursday-Saturday

Where: Museum of Photographic Arts at Balboa Park

Cost: $6-$40

The 9th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival opens in San Diego at the Museum of Photographic Arts this week with five documentaries that focus on a range of social justice issues, from the #MeToo movement to immigration and the fight to protect transgender service members.

The festival opens Thursday with the film "TransMilitary." It tells the personal stories of four transgender troops and their effort to put an end to President Donald Trump's transgender military ban.

The festival continues Friday with "Roll Red Roll," which centers on an infamous high school sexual assault. "Anote's Arch" tackles climate change and "Charm City" explores unprecedented violence in Baltimore. The festival closes with "The Unafraid," which documents the plight of Dreamers in the South.

Festival organizers say this year's selections reflect the current political landscape and issues happening here in San Diego.

Each screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

Joaquin Ortiz, MOPA's director of innovation, and Jennifer Nedbalsky, deputy director of the HRWFF, preview the festival Tuesday on Midday Edition.
