Local Filmmaker to Show Short Film in France

My name is Giancarlo Ruiz and I'm a local filmmaker. This year I submitted my last short film entitled “St. Jacques” to the Short Film Corner Festival de Cannes 2010 -- and surprise, surprise... it got accepted. Beth Accomando has asked me to write a little about this journey after she learned I was going to fly to Cannes. She has been a great supporter and helped with the Fundraiser held at the Media Arts Center San Diego. (Thanks to Ethan Van Thillo, Morgan, Albert and the rest of the gang over at MACSD.) And it starts like this…

MAY 11, 2010

The day starts quick after having a cup of coffee. We drive to the main location at Cannes from Mougins -- that’s where we’re staying. The traffic is bumping. The energy feels high after a very quiet Sunday and Monday – Sundays everything is closed, and Mondays that seems to carry over. As we get to the Palais des Festivals to pick up our badges we realize that the streets of Cannes are suddenly packed to the brim. After getting scanned by security we walk down to the badge area.

“Bonjour!” she says.

I smile back, “Bonjour!”

I give her my name and she gives me a badge. We walk to another booth and we get a bag with all the info from the festival, catalogue etc. We are both excited and can’t believe it -- but it’s true, we are in Cannes. We decide to walk out and have some food. The day is only beginning, the week is barely starting and it feels like the ride is about to begin.

NOTE: Giancarlo Ruiz is also posting to his own Spanish language blog on his Generic Pictures website. And just as an FYI, the last filmmaker I had blogging for me from a festival was Destin Cretton, and he went on to win the award for Best Short at the Sundance Film Festival.
