NATURE presents a two-part series, "THE ALPS." The Alps connect eight countries, spanning 750 miles from the Mediterranean Sea to the Adriatic Sea. On "The High Life," enjoy the Alps in spring and summertime as newborn animals grow up to face the coming brutal winter.

From sea level to peaks rising higher than 12,000 feet, with many of the world’s environments located within its boundaries, each mountain chain is more imposing and more diverse than the next.

When the ice on high alpine lakes begins to break, brown frogs appear with a mission. In the hundreds, brown frogs rush to the water, as none want to miss their annual springtime mating ritual.

On every mountain slope, ridge or meadow, nature’s drama is played out as animals fight for their survival in Europe’s majestic mountains. Experience the hostile and bitter cold ecosystems of the Alps, shaped by snow blizzards and avalanches.

Eight out of ten eagle kills are marmots, mostly youngsters. To protect her young, mother marmots are always on the lookout for deadly eagles.
