Nearly half of all community college students are having a hard time passing math courses. A recent report by EdSource found that out of California's 112 community colleges, 45 percent of their students are finding it difficult to pass college-level math courses.
The report, Passing When it Counts, looked at math classes that are necessary to complete an associate degree or transfer to a four-year institution. Of almost 310,000 students statewide enrolled in those math courses, only 55 percent passed the class with a "C" or higher.
Passing rates varied by ethnicity. For African-American students, the passing rate was the lowest - 41 percent. That was followed by a passing rate of 49 percent for Hispanic/Latino students, 60 percent for white students, and 65 percent for Asian students.
The math pass rates for the San Diego Community College District are similar to the state average. San Diego City College has a 44 percent math course passing rate, followed by San Diego Miramar College at 54 percent and San Diego Mesa College at 60 percent.
The report focused on the fall 2010 term. According to EdSource, passing rates have stayed the same since fall 1992.
