UC San Diego Ranked 37th Best University In U.S., 8th Best Public College

UC San Diego is the 37th best university in the country and the eighth best public college, according to the latest rankings by U.S. News & World Report that were released Tuesday.

The University of San Diego also ranked in the top 100.

"It is an honor for UC San Diego once again to be recognized as one the nation's 10 best public universities," said Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. "Our standing as a top university can be attributed to the campus' commitment to providing a world-class education to our students and producing research and initiatives that help improve and transform the lives of people around the world."

UCSD has been among the magazine's top 10 public universities for more than a decade.

The rankings are based on academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduate rate performance and alumni giving.

The School of Medicine and Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD were also highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

USD ranked 95th overall, and its undergraduate engineering program came in at 14th.

"With our outstanding faculty, students and alumni, our goal for the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering is to become one of the nation's top 10 programs for undergraduate engineering education," said Founding Dean Chell Roberts. "For more than 25 years, the students and faculty have built an exceptional department."

San Diego State University continued its upward climb to No. 149 overall, and was ranked 78th among public universities.

"On behalf of the entire university, I want to congratulate all of our programs that received national recognition," said SDSU President Elliot Hirshman. "This recognition reflects the dedication and commitment of our faculty, staff, students, alumni and community supporters."

Two of SDSU's programs ranked among the top 10 most elite in the country — Rehabilitation Counseling at No. 9; and International Business at No. 10.
