The sensitive subject of sexual violence on campus is the focus of a week-long series of events at San Diego State University called "Take Back The Week."
The week's events will include film screenings, sidewalk chalk art and discussions on masculinity. The effort to raise awareness began with a one-night event called "Take Back The Night" but it was extended to a week because students thought they could do more, said Title IX Coordinator Jessica Rento.
“They put this all together and we’re so excited to support them as we roll out the programing for the campus,” Rento said.
Student and organizer Tanisha Scorza said the battle against sexual violence starts with events like Take Back the Week so people can address the issue.
“I think awareness is the beginning because I think sexual violence is a silent demon,” said Scorza. “It's having constant conversations, and having conversations with the community and getting their opinion on what they feel is victim shaming and what is productive education."
The university wants a dialogue with as many students as possible.
“We’re trying to engage our students as much as we can on this topic because ignoring the problem isn’t going to help solve it,” Rento said.
