More than half of the San Diego Unified School District teachers who received pink slips in recent months will now be coming back this fall.
At a school board meeting Thursday, trustees voted unanimously to rescind layoff notices for 485 teachers because others have agreed to take early retirement. That is about half of the teachers who received preliminary pink slips in March as the district was trying to offset a $124-million budget shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year.
District officials said the jobs of some 700 classified employees remain on the chopping block. They include occupational therapists, cafeteria and maintenance workers, and assistants who help English language learners.
Officials also said the district's libraries will remain staffed next year. The library technicians, mental health clinicians and campus police officers have agreed to 14 furlough days. The furloughs will not impact the school year — workers will take them when school is out.

The cuts still are not final. The district is waiting to see how many more employees take its early retirement package.
