Water Restrictions Start Today in Escondido

Mandatory water-use restrictions start Wednesday in Escondido. Similar water-use restrictions went into effect last month in the city of San Diego.

Escondido residents will be allowed to water their lawns no more than three days a week, for no more than 10 minutes at a time between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m.

Single-family residences with even-numbered addresses can water only on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Odd-numbered addresses will be permitted to water on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Apartments, condos, mobile home parks and businesses can water only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Washing driveways, sidewalks, parking areas and patios with a hose is prohibited.

There are also restrictions on fountains and washing vehicles without an automatic shut-off nozzle.

Violators could face a fine of up to $500.

Escondido city officials say if water customers don't reduce their use by 8 percent, the City Council will consider imposing higher rates.

California is in the third year of drought and recent restrictions on the amount of water that can be pumped from Northern California have also reduced supply.
