A popular vacation area in the city of San Diego opted out of curbside recycling in 2000 because of narrow alleys. But that will change next summer in Mission Beach.
There are drop-off dumpsters for recycling in Mission Beach, but people still toss recyclables into trash cans.
But that changes next summer when Mission Beach joins the city's curbside recycling program.
City Councilman Kevin Faulconer represents the beach neighborhood.
"Having the opportunity for recycling is going to really encourage a lot more people to recycle in Mission Beach it has to be convenient and this will certainly allow for that," Faulconer says.
He says more recycling will reduce the amount of trash heading to the city's landfill.
Specially-designed trucks are needed for the program in Mission Beach because of the narrow alleyways.
Faulconer says it will cost $90,000 a year to provide curbside recycling to about 3,500 Mission Beach homes.
