Military officials have agreed to reduce the number of on base sewage spills as part of a legal settlement with San Diego Coastkeeper.
Jill Witkowski is the waterkeeper for Coastkeeper. She said the number of sewage spills on the base was on an upward trajectory, so Coastkeeper sued two years ago. Construction related spills were a big problem.
"They've also had problems with manhole covers and various parts of their sewage system. We've had long conversations about steps that Camp Pendleton needs to take on various parts of their sewage collection system, to reduce sewage spills," said Witkowski.
Military officials promised to reduce the number of spills to fewer than 10 by 2017. If Base officials do that for two straight years, the settlement will be allowed to expire.
