New York this week became the latest major city to launch a bike-share program.

The San Diego City Council’s Land Use and Housing Committee is meeting today to discuss a proposal for a self service bike-sharing program. They are also taking up the task of increasing bicycle safety in the city. As it currently stands, there are an average 70 bike crashes every month in San Diego.

The San Diego County Grand Jury in May recommended the city gear up to fix and clearly mark bike lanes, which it said has fallen into disrepair.

Bike sharing is growing across the country with more and more cities adopting the program as part of a push toward green transportation.

New York City rolled out its new bike-sharing program earlier this year to the chagrin of many there. Opponents there voiced concerns about new cyclists sharing streets with trucks, cabs and fast-moving cars.
