Downtown Homeless Shelter In Need Of Blankets

Winter Shelter in Need of Blankets

With nighttime temperatures dipping as low as the 20s, San Diego's winter homeless shelter for adults is in urgent need of blankets.

The shelter, in a large tent at the intersection of 16th Street and Newton Avenue downtown, is just blocks away from PETCO Park downtown.

It accomodates 220 people and staff, said Bob McElroy, CEO of the Alpha Project. He said he has to turn away 50 to 60 people a night, but those who don't make it in are given blankets or plastic sheeting to stave off the cold.
