Fourth of July crowds at San Diego beaches usually leave mountains of trash behind. This year there was a lot less debris.
Still, volunteer cleaners made sure things were spic and span.
City crews came by early in the morning after to pick up trash. After that, volunteers organized by the Surfrider Foundation combed the beaches for leftover debris.
After the annual Fourth of July marshmallow fight in Ocean Beach, the sticky treats were everywhere.
Volunteer Nathaniel Sinette said it was unbelievable.
"Honestly, I have a ton under here man, I'm gonna have a bonfire after I'm done cleanin' up, I have 'em all under my shoe, for real," Sinette said, laughing. "But they're all over the place, man. It looks like it snowed bricks, white bricks or something."
Citizen cleaners also mopped up in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and Oceanside.
Last year, volunteers collected more than a half of ton of trash.
