Operating the City Heights Coffee House has created a new sense of community for co-founder Sterling Tran. She said she has grown close to customers and staff while preparing beverages at the nonprofit storefront.
"They become your family in some ways and also the people that you worked with when you're working with people for 40 hours per week, they become your family as well," Tran said.
She's hoping to extend that community this weekend as part of the City Heights Coffee Crawl. It's organized by the City Heights Town Council and is a way for residents to support the area's local small businesses.
"City Heights has over 10 distinct neighborhoods and with those different neighborhoods, one way of showcasing your neighborhood pride and those differences is through the coffee shop," said Taylor McDonald from the City Heights Town Council.

Tran said in the four years that her coffee business has been in City Heights, she's seen several coffee shops pop up in the neighborhood.
"I appreciate that the businesses that have started are really trying to get the community involved and have community involvement and really doing their best to reach out to their neighbors and have it become a community spot," she said.
The Coffee Crawl will take place on Sunday, March 31 and features five coffee shops that serve the City Heights neighborhood.

Urban Life Cafe at 8:45 A.M.
Tumbleweed Coffee at 9:30 A.M.
Burly and the Bean at 10:15 A.M.
City Heights Coffee House at 11:00 A.M.
