One of the world's largest conferences on family violence and sexual assault is taking place in San Diego this week.
It's the 14th Annual International Conference on Violence, Abuse and Trauma and more than 1,000 people are attending workshops on such topics as at-risk youth, elder abuse, and treatment of victims and offenders.
Alliant University's Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma is hosting the conference. Institute Director Robert Geffner said the dynamics are the same all over the world.
"And it doesn't make any difference if we're talking about child abuse, talking about rape, talking about community violence, youth violence, we see high rates in every country," Geffner said.
In San Diego County in 2007, there were nearly 19,000 domestic violence calls to local law enforcement.
