Domestic violence shelters throughout California have gotten a reprieve. Governor Schwarzenegger says he'll sign a bill that restores $16 million of state funding to the shelters.
The governor used his line-item veto to eliminate state funding for domestic violence shelters in July.
That put all of the state's 94 shelters in financial trouble. Six shelters were forced to close. Some of them were the only programs in their county.
Camille Hayes is with the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. She says it's been a terrible situation.
"Women show up, they have their children in tow, Hayes said. "They say, I'm in danger, I need to get out of my home, and at best, the shelters that have closed can offer them a hotel voucher for a couple of nights."
The signing of the bill restoring state funding won't be an immediate fix. Shelters might not receive the money until January.
