San Diego County Kicks Off Mass Vaccination Clinic

More than a thousand people lined up in the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot this afternoon to begin the county's swine flu vaccination event.

The mass vaccination clinic is the kind of event San Diego County has trained for to respond to pandemics and terrorist attacks. Today the drill was put in practice as county health workers administered shots and flu mist to fight the H1N1 virus. The clinic is one of five taking place around the county over the next two weeks. Health officials are concerned that the public has gotten complacent about swine flu. That's why Wilma Wooten, the county health officer, was so impressed by the large turnout at Qualcomm.

"I'm, ah, floored, actually!" she said. "I didn't expect to see so many people so soon. So we're very happy with the turnout."

The clinic can administer up to one thousand doses of vaccine an hour. The San Diego County health department has 41 thousand doses of vaccine at its disposal.
