The holiday season can be one of great joy. But for people experiencing recent life-changing events, such as divorce or the loss of a loved one, it can be a time of pain and loneliness. One San Diego psychologist has some tips for coping with those issues.

Some people may be alone this holiday season. Or, they're feeling the holiday blues.

Glenn Lipson is a forensic and clinical psychologist in San Diego.

He said anniversaries and holidays bring back memories.

"They result in people becoming nostalgic," said Lipson. "There's also the hope to finally have the holiday event that you always wanted to take place. So people end up putting a lot of pressure on themselves. And they have a lot of feelings that come up to deal with."

Lipson said there are several coping mechanisms to handle those feelings.

"Don't forget to take care of yourself during this period of time," said Lipson. "And very often when you're able to do something loving for yourself you're able to handle your stress better and attract the love that you want in your life."

Lipson said that could mean arranging to spend time with people or making a gift for someone.

Another tip he offers is to volunteer with a community organization to help make the holidays special for someone else.

Lipson said in that act of giving, people can become more a part of the spirit of the season.
