Kaiser Permanente Joins Chargers To Collect Sport Donations

The San Diego Chargers set a world record today, but not one you might expect.

The team partnered with Kaiser Permanente to collect thousands of footballs, soccer balls, volleyballs and other athletic balls to donate to local schools and Boys and Girls Clubs.

The record keepers at Guinness World Records said that in doing so, the two organizations set the record for the Largest Donation of Sports Balls in an eight-hour period.

Dr. Paul Bernstein, Kaiser Permanente's Medical Area Director for the San Diego region, said the goal wasn't to get in the record book, but instead to get kids to exercise more in a time of physical education budget cutbacks at San Diego Unified School District.

He said that Kaiser Permanente staff "really wanted to see what we can do to give back to the kids, so they can get out and exercise and really be healthy."

More than 6,800 balls of all kinds were donated at the Qualcomm Stadium event.
