Suicide remains a leading cause of death as 441 people in San Diego County took their own lives last year.
It’s the third year in row the number of local suicides has gone up.
Most suicides occur among adults between the ages of 25 and 54 age group.
Stan Collins, with the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, said there are steps people can take to help those at risk.
Collins said the most important thing is not to be afraid to talk about suicide.
“I think in the past ... the thought has been if you talk about it, you’re gonna cause it to happen," Collins explained. "And the reality is talking about is the only way you’re ever gonna' prevent it. You gotta' know what’s in someone’s head. And the only way you do that is by being direct.”
San Diego County operates a 24-hour crisis line, (888) 724-7240, for people who are feeling suicidal, or just need to talk to a counselor.
