Darfur Violence Prompts Sanctions Against Sudan

President Bush tightened U.S. sanctions against Sudan on Tuesday, saying that Sudan's president is obstructing the peace effort and that Darfur deserves help.

The president promised to impose the sanctions six weeks ago, but he said he was giving the United Nations more time to persuade Sudan's president to allow peacekeepers into the embattled region. It has been three years since the Bush administration first labeled the conflict as genocide.
