India Joins 'Idol' Craze — in Its Own Way

The Indian version of American Idol will take on a decidedly idol-friendly air. Religious Pop Idol will showcase people singing folk music and classical songs based on Indian religious themes and philosophical values.

The show, the creation of India's leading religious channel, is now in preproduction. It is scheduled to air in September. Contestants who want to sing Bollywood songs will be out of luck, unless the lyrics follow a devotional theme. And instead of an album deal, prizes will be visits to religious sites across India.
