Surge Announcement Followed GOP Losses

President Bush first unveiled his plan to send an additional 20,000 American troops to Iraq in a speech to the nation last January. The announcement of the surge came shortly after the midterm elections, in which the Republican Party lost control of both the House and Senate, and as members of the president's own party were clamoring for a change in Iraq strategy. Defense correspondent Guy Raz talks to Scott Simon about the beginnings of the surge — and how it is going now.
