China Expert: Rapid Growth a Factor in Quake's Toll

As the death toll in China's Sichuan province continues to rise after this week's devastating earthquake, co-host Renee Montagne asks Orville Schell, director of the Asia Society Center on U.S.-China Relations, for his take on the province.

Schell says China's rapid economic development has meant substandard construction in the region, which may have contributed to the earthquake's damage. Although the government instituted much stricter building codes after the massive quake of 1976, the pace of China's new construction has made it difficult for building inspectors to enforce those rules, Schell says.
