An event that starts later this week will focus world attention on the cultural life, technology, entrepreneurship and innovations that are happening south of the border.
Tijuana Innovadora, a biennial conference that attracted more than half a million people during its last event in 2012, features 200-plus speakers, exhibits, workshops and special events about technology, food and fashion.
Tijuana Innovadora Vice President, Jaime Gonzalez-Luna, told KPBS Midday Edition that the conference aims to promote community involvement.
“If you have citizens concerned about their community, things can happen, things can change,” Gonzalez-Luna said, “When we were facing bad times, the civic involvement changed many things.”
Two of the major themes of the conference will highlight Tijuana's growing information technology sector and the international boom in Baja cuisine.
“We invite our neighbors north of the border to join us as we learn from world-class speakers, discover the latest in technology and find new ways to work together to win in the global marketplace,” José Galicot, the cofounder and president of Tijuana Innovadora, said.
Keynote speakers include Luis Robles Miaja, president of Mexico’s leading banking institution BBVA Bancomer, former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Tijuana Innovadora will be held at the Centro Cultural Tijuana Oct. 16 to 26.
