The Los Angeles Times Friday published the final installment of a weeklong series of editorials laying out a blistering critique of the presidency and personality of Donald Trump.

Starting with a piece headlined "Our Dishonest President," the Times editorial board systematically denounced Trump for what it called his lack of respect for American democratic institutions, his lack of regard for the truth and his fondness for unproven conspiracy theories.

This multipart condemnation is something rarely seen in a mainstream news publication, even in California against a president as unpopular as Trump. Why did the L.A. Times editors decide to do it, and what do they hope to achieve?
