Hundreds of people gathered at Rosecrans National Cemetery today. KPBS Reporter Tom Fudge has more on the Memorial Day celebration.
The clouds lingered over Point Loma as people listened to speeches and sang patriotic songs. Mark Leonard came with his son and daughter.
"We're hear to honor the military for their sacrifice," he said, "and in particular one Gregory Millard. A young man who used to work for me through High School before he joined the military. He was in the 82nd airborne in special forces and died in Iraq."
I asked him what year.
"Two years ago on this day. On Memorial Day," said Leonard.
A Navy Chaplain, Captain Robert Crossan, addressed the crowd.
Crossan said, "The quality of our lives is not to be measured by the span of our days. And until you've found something for which you're willing to die, you haven't really begun to live."
