As I reported in in the March, 2007 cover story titled "Failing Our Wounded," the Department of Veterans Affairs was failing to properly treat our ailing veterans because of a massive backlog of claims, lack of staff, and a mind-numbing bureaucracy that only exacerbated the stress so many former troops already feel.

Well, according to a well-researched piece in the Houston Chronicle, despite an influx of funds and staff and a well-meaning new leader in Eric Shinseki, things evidently haven't changed much at the VA:
