Patricia Cornwell, an international bestselling author, is launching "America for Vets," a national campaign that will encourage people across the country to make donations to the Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) daily-life readiness programs. Examiner.com's Carol Thomas notes that Cornwell will use the upcoming publicity tour for her latest Kay Scarpetta mystery, "Port Mortuary," to launch this project.
Beginning December 1, at Cornwell's national book-tour stops nationwide, readers can make in-kind donations that will go toward the support of VVSD. Donated items for men and women that will be gratefully accepted include shampoo, conditioner, body wash, combs, brushes, hair gel, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, lip balm, disposable razors, shaving cream, Q-tips, feminine products, and toiletry kits.
Founded in 1981 by veterans of the Vietnam conflict, the VVSD, which was recently profiled on "60 Minutes," helps military veterans make the transition back to civilian life, now serves over 2,000 veterans each year, many of whom have recently served in Iraq and Afghanistan. For those supporters unable to attend Cornwell's events but who would like to donate to VVSD, that can be done online at www.vvsd.net/donate.htm.
