Military Rejects Online School Students

The U.S. military isn't shy about rejecting the applications of high school students who get their diplomas from online schools. An investigative report by the Associated Press finds the Department of Defense allows only ten percent of its recruits to have graduated from alternative institutions like online schools.

Pentagon spokeswoman Eileen Lainez tells the Associated Press the DoD...

Lainez sites statistics that show traditional high school graduates are less likely to drop out of the military than those from non-traditional (i.e. virtual) high schools.

But East San Diego County resident and GOP congressman Duncan Hunter Jr. isn't so sure the Pentagon is treating online school students fairly. He tells the A.P.:

Hunter, a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, is backing language in the Defense Budget that encourages the military to treat all high school graduates equally. The House Armed Services subcommittee on personnel is slated to vote on the budget bill May 11.
