If the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers decides to open the Morganza spillway this weekend, it could save the Louisiana cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge from catastrophic flooding by the Mississippi River. Reuters reports:
But if Morganza Spillway does open, portions of seven Louisiana parishes will be underwater, according to the BBC. Roughly 25,000 residents of those parishes have evacuated their homes, which would no doubt face tremendous damage, if not complete demolition, if Mississippi rolled in. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal warned potential evacuees on his website:
