It's still up in the air whether or not the Camp Pendleton cross will be able to remain on its hilly spot above the base's Camp Horno. A Marine Corps spokeswoman has told the North County Times the decision on whether to let the cross stay has taken so long because it is such an important ruling:

Several Pendleton Marines and one war widow carried the cross to its current location on Veterans Day of 2011 as a memorial to fallen Marines.

The Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers want the cross taken down because they say it's unconstitutional to have a religious symbol on a public land.
