March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. And traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is often called the "signature wound" of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Department of Defense estimates at least 200,000 troops have been diagnosed with TBI in the past decade.
Now the Centers for Disease Control is asking survivors of TBI to tell their stories in order to help others suffering from traumatic brain injuries. There are two ways to do it:
- Upload a video to YouTube describing your experience. The CDC has a YouTube page called "Heads Up TBI Film Festival" where many other TBI sufferers have already uploaded their stories.
- If you don't want to videotape yourself, you can write about your experience with TBI on the "CDC Heads Up - Brain Injury Awareness" Facebook page.
Caregivers of those with TBI are also encouraged to tell their stories, like this woman - who has a very positive message:
