Friends of the late Camp Pendleton Marine Sgt. Manuel Loggins Jr. are holding a fundraiser for his widow and four children Saturday night. The event will take place at the San Clemente Elks Lodge #2068 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.
According to the Facebook page Manny's fundraising dinner:
Sgt. Loggins was shot and killed by Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Sandberg in the early morning hours of February 7th at San Clemente High School. Loggins' two young daughters were in the family car with him when he was shot. Sandberg's union claimed Loggins was acting irrationally and the deputy shot the Marine to protect Loggins' daughters.
Loggins' family, however, has filed a claim with the County of Orange. Family attorney Brian T. Dunn has indicated the family plans to file a federal lawsuit against the Orange County Sheriff's Department claiming civil rights violations and wrongful death.
Loggins' left behind a wife and four children, the youngest of whom was born March 4th.
