Reunited...and it feels so good! After cutting through tons of red tape, it looks like former Marine Cpl. Megan Leavey will finally get to adopt Camp Pendleton military working dog Sgt. Rex.
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer made the announcement that the Marine Corps and Air Force had cleared Sgt. Rex to be adopted by Leavey, who was his handler.
Schumer said in a news release:
Sgt. Rex and Cpl. Leavey served together in the Iraq War. Both were injured in 2006 by an IED. After recovering from his wounds, Sgt. Rex went to work for the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton and was never deployed again.
Leavey was concerned that because Sgt. Rex was to be retired from the service soon, there was a chance he would be euthanized if she didn't adopt him.
Leavey has left the Marine Corps and now lives in New York state. She spoke with the Fox affiliate in New York City yesterday:
