Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills, a soldier who lost all four limbs to an IED blast in Afghanistan on April 10th, underwent surgery today in what is considered a first step on a very long road to recovery.
Mills turned 25 on Saturday. He is part of the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He was on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan when he was injured.
His wife Kelsey Mills gave the following update on her husband's surgery today on a special website - travismills.org - that's been created to keep supporters of the family up-to-date on Mills' condition:
"They have Travis on the ventilator right now just because they had to put a feeding tube further down during surgery and wanted to leave the ventilator in while he was sedated. They are going to take it out shortly when he wakes up. The doctors said the surgery went well. His wounds were still oozing because he has a pulmonary embolism I was not aware of. They did not seem too concerned though. He's now on blood thinners, and they're taking the best care of him possible."
A Facebook group with almost 8,000 members has been started to show support for Staff Sgt. Mills and his family.
