Cmdr. Lee D. Hoey, the commanding officer of Navy Drug Screening Laboratory San Diego, was fired today, according to a Navy press release.

Capt. Mike Macinski, commanding officer of Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center, relieved Cmdr. Lee D. Hoey of his duty, citing:

...a loss of confidence in Hoey's ability to command due to fostering a poor command climate.

The executive officer of Navy Drug Screening Laboratory San Diego, Cmdr. Shelly Hakspiel, was also sacked.

Capt. Macinski defended his decision to relieve Hoey and Hakspiel of their commands:

"The problems that occurred with the drug laboratory leadership had no effect on sample processing, accuracy or the ability of the lab to otherwise carry out its mission. The responsibility of officers in command for their units, Sailors and mission is absolute. We take their performance very seriously, and our standards of conduct and performance for commanding officers are extremely high."

Macinski says Navy drug screening program manager Cmdr. Lisa McWhorter will become the interim commanding officer of NDSL San Diego. Lt. Cmdr. Matt Jamerson will relieve her of the command later this month.
