President Barack Obama announced today that U.S. and NATO forces will hand over the lead in Afghanistan's security to Afghan troops in 2013, a year ahead of schedule, according to the Associated Press.
The Washington Times reports:
NATO said its International Security Assistance Force will hand over command of all combat missions to Afghan forces by the middle of 2013 and withdraw most of its 130,000 troops by the end of 2014.
Afghan troops would then become completely responsible for their own nation's security.
Obama made the announcement at the NATO summit in Chicago.
Obama said:
"Our nations and the world have a vital interest in the success of this mission and I'm confident that we can advance that goal and responsibly bring this war to an end."
Today's milestone NATO agreement would allow NATO and U.S. troops to shift their role in the Afghan War from that of combat, to one of security by next year, according to AFP.
