Two-dozen Sailors and Marines from the San Diego-based USS Makin Island volunteered at the Hong Kong Dog Rescue during a recent four-day port visit to Hong Kong.

According to the U.S. Navy, the shelter is home to more than 400 dogs. The Makin Island volunteers helped bathe the dogs, and did yard work around the shelter.

Marine Cmdr. Julie Hendrickson is a nurse assigned to the Camp Pendleton-based 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. She said volunteering at the shelter was one of the highlights of her visit to Hong Kong:

"I'm definitely a dog person. I always enjoy meeting and connecting with dogs so I was glad to have this opportunity to work with animals and help the people who are trying to help the dogs."

The USS Makin Island is currently on its maiden deployment. The ship left San Diego in November of 2011.
