Illegal immigrants could earn a "path to legal status" if they serve in the U.S. military, according to a plan announced today by GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.
WNYC reports Romney told the audience at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials that his plan would be permanent - and would supercede and replace President Obama's temporary illegal immigration plan announced last week.
Romney explained:
“As President, I will stand for a path to legal status for anyone who is willing to stand up and defend this great nation through military service. Those who have risked their lives in defense of America have earned the right to make their life in America.”
President Obama's immigration plan also allows for military service to be a means for illegal immigrants to gain legal status. Unlike Obama's plan, though, Romney's doesn't allow for college education to be a path to legal status as well.
