An Afghan man wearing a security uniform shot and killed three U.S. Marines on Friday in the Sangin district of Helmand province, according to the Associated Press.
The New York Times reports the three Marines were members of American Special Forces. The shooting took place after the gunman invited the Americans to join him for dinner.
This is the third attack on U.S. troops in a week by members of Afghan security forces who were supposed to be allies.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi told the Associated Press the shooter is a member of Helmand police named Asadullah.
Ahmadi claims Asadullah had been working with U.S. service members to train local Afghan Police.
Ahmadi says after the fatal shooting of the U.S. troops, Asadullah joined the Taliban insurgency.
