Obama Threatens Military Action Against Syria Over Chemical Weapons

Obama Presser On Syria

President Obama said today military action against Syria would be warranted if there was proof Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was moving chemical or biological weapons with the intent to use them.

The president's remarks were made at a news conference at the White House. I've posted video of the entire news conference up top.

About Syria, Obama told reporters:

"We cannot have a situation where chemical or biological weapons are falling into the hands of the wrong people. We have been very clear to the Assad regime - but also to other players on the ground - that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized... We're monitoring that situation very carefully."

CNN has reported that Syria probably has the Arab world's biggest and most advanced chemical warfare (CW) program. According to Michael Eisenstadt of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy:

"Its CW infrastructure is believed to include several production facilities and numerous storage sites, mostly dispersed throughout the western half of the country."

The New York Times reports the chemical weapons are most likely large supplies of mustard gas, the nerve agent sarin, and cyanide.
