The FAA and NTSB are investigating the death of Army Capt. Martin Monahan, 30, who died last week from injuries suffered in a skydiving accident near Honolulu.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Monahan was an Army airborne school graduate and an elite Army Ranger.
However, Monahan suffered his injuries while parachuting with a civilian skydiving company called Skydive Hawaii, according to Hawaii News Now.
Army Capt. Evan Scritchfield told The Honolulu Star-Advertiser:
[B]eing an airborne soldier is "not like jumping out of a plane in the civilian world. It is regimented, and there are certain things that happen in the military that don't necessarily happen in the civilian world."
Monahan was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii.
