Fallen Marine Staff Sgt. Christopher Diaz was not alone when he died Sept. 28, 2011, in Afghanistan — Dino, his bomb-sniffing military dog, was at his side. On Saturday, Diaz's parents adopted Dino in a special ceremony at Camp Pendleton.

U.S. Army Pfc. Matthew H. Walker, 20, was killed June 5, in Paktika province, Afghanistan. He died of wounds suffered when enemy fire attacked his unit, according to the Department of Defense.
